Aro Recommended River, The

India / France 1951, 99 minutes
Dir. Jean Renoir
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Classics, Drama

Topics: Rites-of-passage.

Aroview: A sublime and serene drama set on the banks of India's holy Bengal River in the 1920s, where a trio of young English girls come under the spell of a crippled ex-soldier and are awakened to the natural spectacle of the universe around them.

One of the dir.'s later works, this has long been renowned for its incredible Technicolor visuals, though the characteristic humanism of Renoir's vision has been often underrated in later assessments. Although the acting stumbles at the odd moment, this remains one of cinema's most gracious and spectacular works. Based on the novel by Rumer Godden, and the DVD includes the 1995 BBC documnetary "Rumer Godden: An Indian Affair".
