Schultze Gets the Blues

Germany 2003, 113 minutes
Dir. Michael Schorr
In German with English subtitles
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Comedy

Topics: Late-life.

Aroview: A recently retired worker (Krause) in a dismal German mining town, discovers an unexpected passion for playing Zydeco rhythms on the piano accordion, which takes the portly gentleman and his musical compatriots on a roadtrip all the way to the Louisiana bayou.

Filled with sly touches of deadpan humour, partly courtesy of Schultz's laidback manner, this also suggests a gritty underlay of the stunting cost of the provincial world. As a tale of a life finally fulfilled this has a bittersweet charm, pulling true insight out of a familiar tune. A quirky wee delight.
