Aro Recommended Voices of Iraq

Iraq 2004, 80 minutes
In Arabic, Kurdish, English with English subtitles
Genres: Documentary

Aroview: In January 2004 over 100 digital video cameras were distributed to people in Iraq with the request to film themselves, with the aim of gaining an insight into 'real life' in the war-stricken nation.

Ultimately more nuanced and complex than most treatments of the distressing conflict, this shows people engaged in normal 'everyday' dramas and activities of birthday parties, concerts, meals and work. At the same time the amateur filmmakers capture scenes of grief, torture and death, but edited to suggest a broader portrait, inclusive of 'the other' side of the story which viewpoints like Michael Moore neglect. In fact, this has been claimed as right-wing propaganda by some critics (and it is remarkably pro-Bush), but it cannot be quite so easily pigeonholed. A thought-provoking addition to the canon of 'Iraq films'.
