Syriana
Aroview: Fierce and dense exploration of the machinations and consequences of the global oil industry in the form of a multiple-storyline drama (from the writer of TRAFFIC), intricately weaving together industry intrigues, CIA ops, terrorists and US government backroom dealings.
With all the characters struggling for or against the wealth and power that control of the 'black gold' promises, dir. Gaghan manages, in the stories of a rogue CIA operative (Clooney), an ambitious energy stock-trader (Damon) and a compromised Washington DC lawyer (Wright), to locate three compelling moral arcs which vibrate with appropriate ambiguity and passion. If at times, the weft of the scripting becomes overcomplicated and opaque, Gaghan's skill at marshalling the kinetic camerawork and inflicting plenty of tense moments will leave the most demanding thriller buffs satiated.
