Asphalt

Germany 1929, 90 minutes
Dir. Joe May
Genres: Classics, Drama / Silent Cinema

Aroview: Bravura melodrama from the German Expressionist era wrangles with the divided loyalites of a love-struck police officer who falls for a sultry diamond shoplifter, despite his duty to uphold the law.

While not the seminal export that Fritz Lang was, dir. May's dynamic grapple of montage and camera movement stands as a staunch testament to his place amongst his more celebrated then-contemporaries. A fiercely enjoyable, energetic touchstone of silent cinema.
