Event 16

New Zealand 2006, 72 minutes
Dir. Derek Pearson
Genres: Science Fiction

Topics: Timewarp.

Aroview: An ambitious sci-fi yarn - shot on a shoestring in Wellington - in which the backroom tinkerings of a wannabe young inventor inadvertantly open a time-portal between the colonial past of 1893, the presentday, and a sterile future.

Intercutting timeframes with disorientating swiftness, the central plot follows the escape of a Victorias-era serial killer into the present with a 16th victim being soon lined up for his mounting tally. Although the heavy use of makeshift digital f/x is distracting at times, this has a certain make-believe bravado and a charming surplus of self-confidence.
