Mission: Impossible 3

USA 2006, 126 minutes
Dir. J.J. Abrams
Rating: [M]
Genres: Action/Adventure / Spy

Aroview: Propulsive and hyper-violent third outing for Tom Cruise as US superagent Ethan Hunt, here on a globe-jetting mission to foil a vile arms-trader to terrorists, played with sadistic relish by Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

Directed by ALIAS and LOST mastermind J.J. Abrams, this ups the action set-piece quota to dizzying heights with some superbly intricate concepts, including a helicopter dogfight in a windfarm and rope-swinging combat high on Shanghai skyscrapers. Also introduced is a fresh note of romance, as Cruise marries, only to find his bride (Monaghan) kidnapped and a pawn in the snowballing high stakes of his mission. All up, this boasts a far darker tone than its successors and should reward fans amply.
