Toward the Unknown Region - Malcolm Arnold

UK 2004, 133 minutes
Dir. Tony Palmer
Rating: [G]
Genres: Music, Documentary / Classical Music

Aroview: An in-depth exploration and celebration of the life and music of Britain's foremost 20th century composer - Malcolm Arnold - who not only created many classical works but over one hundred film scores.

Arnold was also known for his alcoholism and mental difficulties, eventually retiring to near-seclusion in Norfolk, and dir. Palmer's treatment adroitly conveys these paradoxes and inner-conflicts of his personality. Replete with numerous performance extracts by the RTE National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland (conducted by Robert Houlihan), along with an 80th birthday bash featuring Elton John, Nigel Kennedy, Julian Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, Richard Attenborough, Julian Bream, Elgar and Hayely Mills.
