Lady in the Water

USA 2006, 110 minutes
Dir. M. Night Shyamalan
Genres: Suspense/Crime / Fantasy

Topics: Fairytale.

Aroview: Adapting his own literary fairytale, M. Night Shyamalan's (SIGNS) fifth film is set around a dank apartment complex, where the dour superintendent (Paul Giamatti) rescues a mysterious young woman (Howard) from a swimming pool, who then entangles him in battles between supernatural entities enacted according to arcane cosmic laws.

Among the eccentric residents of the complex - including bodybuilder, film critic, and visionary author - Giamatti finds a Korean woman (Cheung) who can help him comprehend the threat of the mysterious 'Scrunt' lurking in the woods beyond the swimming pool. While Shyamalan's visual clarity and moral sincerity are in ample evidence, this time his story flounders in the waters of a made-up, impenetrable 'mythology', trickling out to an only just satisfying conclusion.
