Melding live-action footage, stop-motion animation and bizarre puppetry, the film evokes everything from German Silent Expressionism to the psychosexual power plays of Freud and Jung, forgoing coherency for the often-exhilarating visual experience of gothic theatrics and otherworldly set-pieces.
