Antonello and the Architect

New Zealand 2007, 77 minutes
Dir. Tony Hiles
Genres: Documentary

Topics: Architecture.

Aroview: A fitting tribute to Wellington architect Bill Toomath (whose associations include the likes of I.M. Pei), dir. Tony Hiles backdrops the 80-year-old’s life, influences and expansive career against his latest revolutionary project.

Conceiving a ‘design den’ beneath his Roseneath house inspired by Antonello da Messina’s 15th century renaissance painting ‘St Jerome in his Study’, Toomath’s radical interior concept is matched by some inventive use of time-lapse photography, meaning this is never stuffy or un-insightful in profiling a unique creative mind and its seduction through art.
