Fool's Gold

Aroview: Combustable rom-com coupling McConaughey and Hudson reunite for this high seas adventure; he plays a bum treasure hunter obsessed with finding a legendary cache; she plays his alienated wife, thrown back into the deep end of an against-the-clock gold rush.

Up for discovery: bullion, old nemeses (Ray Winstone), and unrequited love, which benefits greatly from Hudson and McConaughey’s bronzed-blonde chemistry (and the latter’s sun-drenched shirtlessness). Less successful is the film’s marriage of action, comedy and romance, which is regularly off-key and awkwardly placed.
