Children Of The Silk Road

aka: The Children of Huang Shi
China 2008, 114 minutes
Dir. Roger Spottiswoode
Genres: Drama / History, War

Topics: Period 1930s.

Aroview: Inspired by real events, this solid WWII epic reveals the story of a young British journalist and Australian nurse who led sixty orphans to safety across the Liu Pan Shan Mountains during the Japanese occupation of China.

Bearing contentious comparison to the heroic deeds of our own Rewi Alley, this inspirational tale is given heft by Hong Kong’s finest (Yeoh and Yun-Fat) and the splendid cinematography of Xiaoding Zhao (HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS), and while it might not boast the sweeping grandiosity of similar fare, stirs in enough tension to keep things interesting most of the way.
