Sinking of Japan, The

aka: Nihon chinbotsu
Japan 2006, 135 minutes
Dir. Shinji Higuchi
In Japanese with English subtitles
Genres: Foreign Cinema, Science Fiction

Topics: Disaster.

Aroview: Japan is posited as a submerging island nation in this cloying, ultra-earnest disaster movie, based on the (oft-told) theory that seismic and volcanic activity will eventually swallow the country whole.

Minces a corny, unrequited love story and conventional perspectives on survival and sacrifice (but not, more interestingly, social disorder and the implications of a homeless nation), with a surprising lack of destruction spectacle that would otherwise provide the necessary, if all too fleeting pay-off.
