Miracle of Berlin

Aroview: Ambitious telemovie set in Berlin, 1988, where a rebellious young man is forced by his father - a high-ranking Stasi officer - to leave his girlfriend and join the army to protect the 'democratic' republic.

Although dir. Richter may have intended to explore the effects the societal collapse had on families and intimate relationships, a formulaic romantic storyline overshadows such political commentary, and this ultimately comes off as Mils and Boon in the GDR.
