Rip! A Remix Manifesto

Canada 2008, 85 minutes
Dir. Brett Gaylor
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary, Music / Independent

Aroview: A exuberant celebration of remix culture which also introduces the debate over intellectual property rights with the help of featured guests, including Brazil's Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil and Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig.

Presented by digital activist Brett Gaylor and mash-up musician Girl Talk (whose work is technically illegal), it's clear which side of the debate this film is on, and the entertainment industry is predictably positioned as the 'big bad', inhibiting the artistic freedoms of musicians through countless lawsuits. Head-noddingly entertaining for those grappling with that increasingly blurred line between inspiration and infringement.
