Wigan Casino, The

UK 1977, 26 minutes
Dir. Tony Palmer
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Documentary

Topics: Period 1970s.

Aroview: Captivating time-capsule about The Wigan Casino, a famous dance hall near Manchester, which was home to ‘Northern Soul' in the mid 1970's, and a style of dancing which would become known worldwide as ‘breakdancing'. It contrasts wonderfully scenes of hip kids striking moves, against a grim background of industrial slums and unemployment.

From the great Tony Palmer, who made the landmark music documentary ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE the same year, this is a celebration of the joy and rebellion found in music, and it's importance in youth culture, whatever the age.
