Bling Ring, The

USA 2013, 90 minutes
Dir. Sofia Coppola
Genres: Drama / Youth

Topics: Satire.

“A funny, sarky, bang-on portrayal of the freakiness of celeb obsession. The story would sound outrageous - if it wasn't true.”~Time Out

Aroview: Sophia Coppola directs this self-aware drama based on the true story of a group of fame-obsessed teenagers who use the internet to track celebrities' whereabouts in order to rob their homes.

After SOMEWHERE, the director again explores modern-day ennui in the Hollywood Hills, but her methodology of encouraging on-camera spontaniety here is betrayed by vapid characters that can't come up with anything interesting to say or do. Additionally problematic is the lack of dramatic tension due to the absense of barriers between the characters and their targeted crime scenes, and we're ultimately left with a attractively-shot chronicle of teenage girls partying, taking drugs and trying on clothes.
