Bigger than Tina

Australia 1999, 95 minutes
Dir. Neil Foley
Rating: [M]
Genres: Comedy

Topics: Mock-umentary, Showbiz.

Aroview: This Australian music mockumentary is played so deadpan that those unfamilar with the players might easily read it as non-fiction.

As admirable as it is, the banalities of everyday living adds much authenticity but also dilutes the comic impact. It's the story of Dan Vardy-Cobb, a talent-quest crooner from the Melbourne suburbs who treasures his block-mounted John Farnham poster and aspires to be "bigger than Tina" (Arena - Queen of Oz MOR pop). The entire cast (playing family, friends and industry types) don't drop their guard for a moment and a particular highlight is an intense, protracted recording session that culminates in a cringing display of ego meltdown.
