Whatever Happened to Harold Smith?

UK 1999, 92 minutes
Dir. Peter Hewitt
Genres: Comedy

Topics: Period 1970s, Showbiz, Rites-of-passage, Late-life.

Aroview: This whimsical coming-of-age tale set in the divide between disco and punk cultures in 1977 Britain has more to offer than just vibrant nostalgia.

Its parallel story of the not-so-young is where its real charm lies - Tom Courtenay is brilliantly deadpan as the eponymous Harold Smith, a shy, retired couch potato who gains unlikely late-life celebrity as a Uri Geller-like guru of telekinesis. Corny idea is brought real pathos by the veteran actor, ably supported by the high profile cast.
