Occupation by Italian and later German forces provides an uneasy backdrop to various village dramas, chiefly a burgeoning romance between Penelope Cruz and Christian Bale. Adapted from the novel by Louis de Bernieres (with the war sequences abbreviated), this also features a slightly miscast Nicolas Cage.

2 stars (Good Try) Cage and Bale struggle with their accents.John Hurt and David Morrissey take care of the acting requirements.Didn't really need the romance - good story without it. ~Tubbs
