Bookshelf on Top of the Sky, A

aka: 12 Stories About John Zorn
Germany 2002, 82 minutes
Dir. Claudia Heuermann
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary, Music / Jazz & Blues

Topics: Experimental.

Aroview: A fittingly unconventional look at the background and achievements of postmodern musician/composer John Zorn, made by longtime fan, Claudia Heuermann.

An all-inclusive music experimentalist, Zorn's repertoire ranges wildly from jazz infused with punk and metal to classical and ethnic pieces, with wild exercises in improvisation and pace also characteristic of his performance endeavours. The director experiments with filmmaking methodology by infusing some of Zorn's techniques with her own film editing, resulting in a series of seemingly disjointed stories that as much reflect the film-maker as that of her curious subject.
