Aro Recommended Testament of Dr. Mabuse, The

Germany 1933, 115 minutes
Dir. Fritz Lang
Rating: [M]
Genres: Classics, Suspense/Crime

Aroview: Dir. Lang's brilliant sequel to the silent DR. MABUSE - THE GAMBLER, rethinking his vision of the evil controlling mastermind for the nascent Nazism of 1930s Germany.

Imprisoned at the close of the first film, this sees Mabuse (Klein-Rogge) preaching an insane criminal gospel from within the asylum walls, a 'testament' that begins to be enacted in the outside world. Again utilising an array of inventive visual devices, dir. Lang crafts a telling allegory of the hypnotic power of fascism - a fact recognised by the German minister of propoganda himself (Joseph Goebbels), who promptly banned it.
