Lenny Bruce Without Tears

USA 1972, 78 minutes
Dir. Fred Baker
Rating: [Exempt]
Genres: Documentary, Comedy / Standup Comedy

Aroview: Unsparing yet compassionate, this documentary covers the life of oneof the most renowned comedians of the 20th century, Lenny Bruce, whose stage antics in the 1950s and '60s broke new ground on the American standup circuit.

Combining freewheeling fantasy, racially and sexually charged material and Jewish self-irony, Henry at his best was brilliant at skewering political hypocrites of all persuasions. By the mid-60s however he had been harassed off most public stages in America by the efforts of conservatives and police and his later decline into drug addiction is devastatingly evident by the time of his death in 1966.

The documentary features much original footage (and some audio-only material), and interactions with the likes of Steve Allen, Kenneth Tynan, Nat Hentoff and Malcolm Muggeridge.
