Bitter Victory

Aroview: Superior war drama is set around a WW2 mission by British commandos in North Africa, trying to retrieve vital papers from a German HQ before retreating across the unforgiving desert sands.

Burton and Jurgens play the two commanding officers, disimiliar in temperament and divided by a woman's love, who play a cat and mouse game of survival under each other's watchful eye. Regarded by some (including Jean-Luc Godard) as one of dir. Ray's finest efforts, this is admirably complex, though perhaps not of the stature of his earlier efforts.
