Aroview: A hybrid of crime thriller and ghost story, this remake of the British classic "Seance on a Wet Afternoon" reinstates the supernatural emphasis of the original novel and emerges as a better-than-average Japanese horror film.
The story of a psychic and her placid husband who inadvertently kidnap a missing child, they contrive a scheme to pull themselves out of their middle-class banality, with tragic results. Though the mesh of genres doesn't always best serve the story, dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa's distinctive visual style is evocative and refreshingly disciplined.
