Nighthawks
Aroview: Hailed on release as the first British gay feature , this groundbreaking drama focuses on the double life of a school-teacher who remains in the closet to most around him, but at night cruises the dance clubs of drab mid-1970s London.
With grainy documentary technique and improvised acting, this takes a little patience at first, but soon rewards with a striking portrait of downbeat disaffection and finally, redemption. Reminiscent of the work of Ken Loach this likewise prioritises gritty observation, but perhaps succeeds best in its lingering discotheque pick-up scenes.
