Imaginary Heroes

USA 2004, 111 minutes
Dir. Dan Harris

Aroview: Heartfelt and competent drama charts the fragmentation of a suburban American family after the unexpected suicide of the eldest son, a star-athlete, as family members each pursue their own 'solutions' to the crisis.

With the father (Daniels) withdrawing from intimacy, scriptwriter-director Harris steers the storyline into the journeys of discovery for the mother (Weaver), who stumbles into dubious clouds of marijuana smoke, and the younger brother (Hirsch), who overcomes his awkwardness to likewise create druggy connections with others. Although not all the plot twists strike true, this captures a certain pathos of disconnection and half-hearted redemption.
