Winter Soldier
Aroview: An astonishing and rare document of the Vietnam War, which records how over one hundred members of Vietnam Veterans Against the War gathered in Detroit in 1971 - in the months following the revelation of the 'My Lai' massacre by American troops - to detail their own misdeeds.
Consisting almost solely of unflinching personal testimony in the style of SHOAH, this provides perhaps a visceral and shocking anti-war statement, tracking not only a series of casual atrocities, but also the emotional impact on those who committed them. The film was rarely screened after its 1972 debut, probably because its revelations were too hot for mainstream cinema to handle. Filmed by a collective of eighteen individuals including Barbara Kopple, Robert Fiore, Lucy Massie and David Grubin.
Interesting footnote: a brief glimpse can be had of the Democrat Party's 2004 Presidential Candidate, John Kerry.
