Genres: Foreign Cinema, Drama / Courtroom, War
Topics: Period 1940s.
Feat. Julia Jentsch
Aroview: An interesting and worthy companion piece to the excellent DOWNFALL, this necessarily grim drama looks at the trial of 21-year-old activist student Sophie Scholl by the Nazis in 1943.
The real-life Scholl, who today is regarded as a German national heroine, impulsively distributed pamphlets at a university, and the film constructs her final few days based on the court transcripts and the Gestapo interrogation records. More a police procedural than a historical epic, it's a story of courage and moral righteousness that gathers a real sense of suspense and drama, and will continue to have resonance in contemporary times.

4 stars (Very Good) A portrait of guts. ~Tubbs
5 stars (Exceptional) Filmed with great integrity. Julia Jentsch plays Sophie as low-key, but very strong. Extra interviews with living family members & Mohr's son shed more light on the times & reveal how progressive the Scholl family is. Real footage of trial horrifying. ~Sandy
5 stars (Exceptional) Shockingly moving, a must-view glance at recent history; a cycle of killing and suppression endlessly repeated by our species. Heart-breaking! ~Sandy
