Aroview: Chen Kaige elevates the sumptuous Chinese epoch of FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE with this visually rapturous, though far less coherent saga of epic war-torn romance between Leslie Cheung and Gong Li during China’s tumultuous early 20th century.

Ace cinematographer Christopher Doyle drowns the viewer in an overwhelming flood of imagery, best left to wash over the senses in lieu of the film’s otherwise confounding tale of unrequited love. As with Kaige's previous racy effort, this was banned from release in the director's homeland.
