Offsetting the film’s predictable horseplay is a more rewarding insight into the father-daughter dynamic, with country singer Tim McGraw’s domineering, old-school paternalism tempering an interesting friction with Lohman’s headstrong teen pride (at 27, still utterly convincing as a young girl).
