Aroview: Soviet poetic realism brings a contemplative tone to the theatre of war, following a soldier’s pilgrimage back home after being granted leave for an act of battlefield heroism.

Prosaic Russian visuals typify this aesthetically, though Chukhrai’s treatment is otherwise atypical for a war film, distinguished by meditative emotions and humanist overtones.
