More down-and-dirty throwback to the DEATH WISH school of revenge than, say, THE BRAVE ONE’s contemporary gender-bending, dir. Wan also impresses with controlled aggression, striking a balance between sadism and style that’s entertaining, if always showy. Morally indifferent, this is best viewed as a catharsis through violence, where justice is delivered with righteous zeal.
