USA 2008, 86 minutes
Dir. Peter Travis
Genres: Action/Adventure, Suspense/Crime / Hostages & Terrorism
Feat. Matthew Fox, Forest Whitaker, Dennis Quaid, Sigourney Weaver, William Hurt, Bruce McGill, Édgar Ramírez
Aroview: Tipsy, time-swapping political thriller cribs liberally from RASHOMON and TV-terrorist heart-stopper 24 in congealing multiple ‘vantage points’ to an assassination attempt on the United States president.
Aiming for a post 9/11 discord, dir. Travers loads the narrative with far-fetched conspiracies, shifting perspectives, and short-lived truths, ushering the viewer through a series of plot reveals, car chases, and run-and-gun action seqences, all achieved with unspectacular efficiency. While the diverse casting offers some respite as the likes of Whitaker (tourist), Quaid (secret service agent) and Weaver (TV news director) vie for attention, the end result – despite the promise of a multifaceted outcome – is strictly cut and dry.

3 stars (Good Enough) Vantage Point is an assassination/conspiracy thriller that reveals its story through the eyes of a number of different witnesses, trying to keep the audience guessing until each reveal. It's a cool idea, but not brilliantly executed. ~Tom H

2 stars (Good Try) The 1st time I saw this I thought it was pretty boring watching the same explosion 27 times. After a second watch though, I realised it is classic escapism that could become a cult favourite for midnight viewing particularly if our drug laws are relaxed. ~Tubbs
