Dan in Real Life
Aroview: Sensitively handled indie rom-com starring funny-man Steve Carell (THE OFFICE) as a relationship advice writer who falls hard for his brother's new lady (Binoche) at a family reunion.
Underscored by well-drawn, recognisable characters and a refreshing appreciation of the messy realities of daily life (hence the title), this is surprisingly bristly and thus more endearingly human than your average romantic comedy, with Carell and Binoche achieving an unexpectedly warm chemistry. Carell in particular excels, showcasing a dramatic depth only hinted at in his previous films. Perhaps a bit predictably reconciled, but will have won over many hearts by the time the credits roll.
