Wristcutters: A Love Story
Aroview: Wilfully eccentric suicide comedy (!?) set in a warped and washed-out afterlife inhabited solely by suiciders, in which a young no-hoper (Fugit) goes on an existential road trip through limbo with a Russian rocker (Whigham) and a Goth hitchhiker (Sossamon), in the hope of tracking down his recently deceased ex-girlfriend.
Streaked with the kind of absurdist Slavic humour found in the films of Emir Kusturica, dir. Dukic's debut is realised with an off-kilter simplicity that occasionally falls victim to tonal flatness and self-conscious irreverence, but is carried off with understated charm by a convincingly quirky cast, including Tom Waits as a sage old campground guru. Sadly passing on opportunities for deeper metaphysical discussion, and ultimately not all that far removed from the 'real world', but ironically uplifting in a way that's sure to guarantee a faithful cult following.
