Death Race
Aroview: Give ‘em what they want actioner starring the genre’s go-to guy Jason Statham as a former racing champ turned wrongfully imprisoned convict who must compete in a prison 'Death Race' (where weapon-enhanced monster car drivers battle to the death) in order to survive and escape incarceration.
Ostensibly marketed as a juiced-up remake of cult classic DEATH RACE 2000, this all but dispenses with that film’s satirical overkill for an adrenalin-drenched overkill of its own: ADD editing, an ear-clobbering soundtrack, an abundance of heavy artillery, and gaming console car chases filmed in rather dulling colours. Ludicrously premised popcorn that’ll be satisfying for Statham disciples and testosterone-filled teens, this is ultimately saved from the genre scrapheap by the arch turns of Allen and DEADWOOD’s McShane.

3 stars (Good Enough) Paul Anderson is not afraid of making a shallow action experience with more thrills than thought, and Death Race is no exception. A lot more entertaining than I expected, this is a true adrenaline rush of petrol, lead, and fire. ~Tom H
2 stars (Good Try) Good stunt driving and effects. The racing just goes round and round time and again - much like it does today. ~Tubbs
