Borderland
Aroview: Unexpectedly effective horror following three recent college-graduates as they stumble across a human-sacrifice cult during a heady holiday in Mexico.
With unnervingly realistic scenes involving severed limbs, popped eyeballs and obnoxious American frat-boys getting their comeuppance, this sits securely in the rather tired torture subgenre, although is elevated above many of its peers through suspenseful storytelling and powerful performances, particularly from an unlikely Sean Astin (LORD OF THE RINGS) as a sinister member of the converted. It would be easy to scoff at the 'based on true events' shtick, but the power of this statement upon reflection is undeniable.
