Crips and Bloods: Made in America

USA 2008, 93 minutes
Dir. Stacy Peralta
Rating: [M]
Genres: Documentary / Gangsters, History

Topics: African-American, Indigenous & Minority Cultures.

Aroview: Incisive documentary examining the shared histories and violent rivalries of Los Angeles' most notorious street gangs.

Tracing the roots of the gangs back to the segregated housing laws, this is an accessible introduction to the tragic confluence of racism, politics and geography that has so far claimed 15,000 lives. Though mostly skimming the surface, dir. Peralta more than hints at the complexities involved and weaves a wealth of archival footage into a richly dispiriting tapestry.
