Proposal, The

Aroview: America's sweethearts Bullock and Reynolds team up in this tepid rom-com about a driven editor who bribes her younger assistant to marry her in order to avoid deportation back to Canada.

Despite the screwball potential, this is a rather grim, stilted affair, which would be forgivable if the two leads had a spark of chemistry, which, unfortunately, they don't. A paint-by-numbers script and a gratingly shrill turn from Betty White as the kooky old granny (who has a perchance for native Indian rituals) makes this all a bit embarrassing, although perfectly adequate as 'switch-your-brain-off' entertainment.
