Big Night, The

Aroview: Tense melodrama has Barrymore traumatised by watching his father submit to a beating at the hands of a petty gangster. Setting out to avenge his father's shame he descends into the criminal underworld. Wildly variable in tone, this examination of masochism and emasculation makes for an absorbing if exhausting watch.
