Skammen

Aroview: Bleak parable set against the back drop of a fictional war finds an apolitical couple aloofly living out their days on an island indulging in various intellectual pursuits, but then the violence and unrest comes to their previously peaceful isle.

Typically harrowing allegory from Bergman is regarded as one of his finest. This is a scabrous portrait of ideology and the worst of humanity combined and unlikely to bring anyone much cheer, but as a display of brute directorial strength it's hard to go past.
