Secret in Their Eyes, The
Aroview: Arresting, well-rounded Argentine crime drama sees a retired court employee become obsessed with a 25-year-old murder case that he believes wasn't properly resolved.
Peels back the layers of truth in fairly conventional terms of the genre, but with a mix of interestingly flawed characters (led by the magnetic Ricardo Darin), who each reflect the resonating effect of political instability on professional and personal lives. Has proved extremely popular in satisfying these thematic threads, culminating in a 'secret' that arrives well sign-posted yet not without surprise. No real surprise that it received the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film, though as always, lesser expectations may be more greatly rewarded.
