Il Divo
Aroview: Dazzling, high-end political intrigue from dir. of CONSEQUENCES OF LOVE speculates on the years following Giulio Andreotti’s seventh term as Italian Prime Minister, and the Mafia ties which threatened to bring an end to his controversial legacy.
Though perhaps too showy and self-conscious in style, the prodigious camera work and heady sound design lends a heightened sense of reality to this astonishing yarn, all the more outlandish given Andreotti was still alive at the time of its release. The affected tone of the film also accentuates the satirical and black comedy elements to the fullest, though let it be said those unfamiliar with the Italian political landscape may struggle to make sense of the machinations at work, played out with gusto and at a cracking pace.
