Aroview: Justifiable American remake elevates the style and menace of the Swedish vampire hit with special attention paid to the relationship between a bullied youngster and his undead next-door neighbour.
By virtue of its faithfulness to the original material, this loses some of its impact as a second run at John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel, though it does replicate the story’s key scenes with aplomb, and even adds a thrilling car chase sequence to the mix. Central to its distinctiveness, though, is its tender portrayal of adolescent romance, with Chloe Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee both superb in challenging roles. Made under the revived "Hammer" production banner.

4 stars (Very Good) I'm still ambivalent as to whether there is any need for this remake, but that aside it is very well done. It's slightly less subtle than the earlier Swedish version, but retains the main qualities: good acting, great ambiance, chilling set pieces. ~SteveParkes
3 stars (Good Enough) The two young actors are fine - although the plot is a remake the script is a good one - but what is most effective are the vampire segments and they lift the film above the norm. ~Tubbs
