Mildred Pierce (TV Mini-Series)
Aroview: Kate Winslet gives a towering performance as the titular housewife of James M. Cain's classic noir novel of Depression Era desperation and mother-daughter discord.
Dir. Haynes's unwavering eye for period detail and authenticity extends to the scripting of this gold-standard HBO production, which adapts Cain's text almost to the letter, and certainly to the chapter, dispensing with the murder subplot that was grafted onto the original 1945 film starring Joan Crawford.

3 stars (Good Enough) Faithful and minutely detailed, but the Curtiz version better serves the spirit of Cain's vivid prose, and I'd swap Winslet's worthy drudge for Crawford in a heartbeat. Worth watching for the sterling supporting cast, but a long haul. ~HiFi
