Toast
Aroview: Heartily nostalgic adaptation of chef and author Nigel Slater's best-selling memoir, about growing up in a stodgy British household in the 60s with a hunger for gourmet cuisine.
Slight and a filled with broadly sketched relationships, this portrait of a mostly unloving childhood works best as a historical tour of Britain's lumpen food fare (which was also aped in New Zealand). Suffers from the usual problems of memoir adaptations, though, with the facts standing in the way of telling a more compelling story.
