Young Adult
Aroview: Charlize Theron plays a washed-up writer of young adult fiction pursuing the affection of a former sweetheart in this discomforting comedy from JUNO scribe Diablo Cody.
Theron is great in a willfully regressive role that plays to her strengths as an “uber bitch”, and Cody’s script is refreshingly stripped back from the all-knowing humour and pop-cultural references of her previous hit screenplay. If not quite delivering on the promise of a comedy of humiliation, the desperation and self-defeating behaviour ring true.

2 stars (Good Try) Theron is good and Oswalt very good, but you keep waiting for a surprise that never comes. In this sense its Juno all over again, this time by way of The Graduate: the twee, willful quirkiness maybe gone, but its "hard edge" feels half-hearted. ~fairbrother
3 stars (Good Enough) Charlize choses another unflattering role. ~Tubbs
