USA 1986, 110 minutes
Dir. Tony Scott
Rating: [PG]
Genres: Action/Adventure / Romance, Propaganda
Topics: Aviation.
Aroview: Star-making film for Cruise, who goes through all the right motions to get millions of bums on seats. The routine plot is overcome by the breath-taking aviation.
United States Navy recruiting booths were actually set up at some theaters during the initial release. In its wake, enlistment skyrocketed.
Average rating (Good Try). Showing 1-3 of 4 member reviews.
3 stars (Good Enough) Possibly one of the most loved 80's block-busters, and they certainly don't make 'em like this anymore (it's 'actual' flying, not computer generated). Silly storyline, but action-packed. So good, they're actually making a sequel.. ~GenXGirl
2 stars (Good Try) Although Cruise is in it - it is a man's picture even though there is a compulsory romantic unnecessary subplot as a fill in between the excellent flying sequences. ~Tubbs
1 star (Turkey) This isn't the beginning of supposedly 'liberal' Hollywood making recruitment films for the military (nor the end - see Captain Marvel for a particularly blatant example) but it is one of the most blunt. ~Pearce
